Copyright & Takedown

Last updated: 2026

This archive quotes primary texts and translations that belong to other people. This page explains what is and is not claimed here, and how to ask for a passage to be corrected, better attributed, or removed.

Editable template. The process below is a good-faith procedure, not a statement of compliance with any specific statutory takedown regime. Adapt it to your jurisdiction and circumstances, and take professional advice if a request has legal significance.

What this site does not claim

This site does not claim ownership of the primary texts, editions, or translations it quotes. Rights in those materials remain with their authors, editors, translators, and publishers, who are named in the citation attached to every entry. Where a translation is in the public domain, that is stated through the named translator and edition; where it is not, the passage is quoted briefly with attribution for reference purposes.

What this site does claim

The material original to this archive is its editorial apparatus: entry titles, thematic classification, contextual notes, the fiction/nonfiction designation, the selection and arrangement of passages, and the site's design and code. Reuse of that apparatus should be credited to this site.

Quotation practice

Entries are intended to be short excerpts sufficient to identify, verify, and study a passage, not substitutes for the works they come from. Every entry names its source edition and links to the text consulted, so readers are directed back to the original rather than away from it. Where a rights holder tells us an excerpt is longer than they consider appropriate, the default response is to shorten or remove it.

Requesting correction, attribution, or removal

If you hold rights in material quoted here, or believe a passage is misattributed, send a message to the address on the Contact page including:

  • The entry title and, if possible, a link to it.
  • The specific text at issue, quoted as it currently appears on the site.
  • The work, edition, or translation the material comes from.
  • Your relationship to the material — for example rights holder, publisher, estate, or authorised representative.
  • What you are asking for: corrected attribution, a shortened excerpt, or removal.
  • How to reach you for a reply.

Requests are reviewed in good faith and as promptly as is practical for a independently maintained project. Where a request is clear and comes from a rights holder or their representative, the usual outcome is prompt correction, shortening, or removal of the passage. A note may be kept recording that an entry was changed or withdrawn.

Reporting an error instead

If your concern is accuracy rather than rights — a mistranscribed word, a wrong translator, a bad citation — that is equally welcome and usually faster to fix. See Contact.

Reusing material from this archive

If you want to reuse a quoted passage, the permission you need is from the rights holder of that text or translation, not from this site. If you want to reuse this archive's own editorial material, see Contact.
